Cricket Bats

At the Greg Chappell Cricket Centre, we know purchasing a new cricket bat can be an exciting, but sometimes daunting task. That's why we're happy to assist you in any way we can to select and prepare your new cricket bat!

Arguably the most exciting piece of cricket equipment you can buy yourself; here's your guide to selecting that perfect piece of willow.

1. Bat Size - Get It Right From the Start

This is fundamental. Junior bat sizes range from 00 (smallest) to SA (Small Adults)
Size 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Youth/Harrow, Small Adults

For juniors who might be just about to start their cricketing journey, the bat should reach your hip bone comfortably when standing upright with the bat resting on the ground.

Senior size bats are usual:
Short Blade (SB), Short Handle (SH) , Long Blade (LB)

The most common adults size bat is the Short Handle, which suits the vast majority of players. Long Blade bats are available for taller players (typically over 193cm) who prefer a longer hitting area. Short Blades can be perfect for those with a slighter build, this could be an adolescent moving into their first senior bat, or a female cricketer

Always check the manufacturer's size chart and where possible, get a fitting from one of our GCCC Kit Crew – a bat that's too long or too short will throw off your balance and timing.

SIZE GUIDE

2. Bat Weight
This is highly personal.
For Junior bats, the manufacturing will always try to make these as lightweight as they can for the kids.
For Senior cricket bats, they typically range from 2lb 7oz to 3lb+.

Too Heavy: A bat that's too heavy will slow your bat speed, make it difficult to adjust to quick deliveries, and lead to fatigue.

Too Light: A bat that's too light might feel whippy, but it can lack power and sometimes lead to a loss of control if you over-swing.

The "Pick-Up" Test: This is more important than the actual static weight on a scale. Hold the bat by the handle and extend it in front of you. Does it feel balanced? Does it feel lighter than its actual weight? This "pick-up" is critical for comfortable manoeuvring and quick hand-eye coordination. A well-balanced heavier bat can often feel lighter on the pick-up than a poorly balanced lighter bat.

3. Sweet Spot Position
Tailor your sweet spot to your style of play - usually cricket bats will be marked as having a low, mid, or high sweet spot.
Here's a breakdown below:

Low Sweet Spot: Favoured by front-foot players, typically those playing on flatter, slower pitches (less common here, but good for driving).

Mid Sweet Spot: The most common and versatile profile, suitable for all-round players and a good choice for the variety of pitches we encounter.

High Sweet Spot: Preferred by back-foot players, or those playing on bouncier pitches (like some fast wickets). Good for cutting and pulling.

4. English vs Kashmir Willow
This is a BIG one!
So what's the difference?

English Willow: This is the gold standard for cricket bats due to its superior performance, lightness, and responsiveness. It's renowned for its fantastic "ping" (the sound and feel of the ball coming off the bat).

English Willow is typcially graded (Grade 1 being the highest, then 2, 3, etc.). Higher grades typically have more unblemished grains, better performance, and a higher price tag. But Don't be afraid of a few blemishes or a slightly lower grade if the bat feels good – sometimes a Grade 3 bat can outperform a Grade 1!

Kashmir Willow: This is a more affordable and durable alternative. However, it's typically heavier and doesn't offer the same "ping" or feel as English willow.
Kashmir willow is ideal for casual play, beginners, or those on a tighter budget. For serious match play, especially at higher levels, English willow is highly recommended.

5. What does "Ping" mean for a cricket bat?
If you’ve ever picked up a cricket bat in-store, you’ve probably heard someone say: “That bat has great ping.” But what does that actually mean? Fraser explains below -

A mid-to-low sweet spot and extended profile, create a huge hitting zone and effortless power transfer, while the semi-oval handle offers stability and control through every stroke. Developed in collaboration with Australian superstar Glenn Maxwell.

Endorsed By: Glenn Maxwell
Sweet Spot
: Mid to Low
Willow: Grade 3 English Willow

These edges are heading close to the magic 40mm mark. Big edges make for a forgiving and powerful cricket bat with a wider sweet spot. Please be aware that junior bats can still have big edges but they will be relative to 40mm due to their size.

Often combined with big edges to create a forgiving bat with an extra wide hitting zone which still rewards striking the blade out of the very middle.

The full players style cricket bat is the peak of cricket bat production. This kind of profile is both the most powerful and most forgiving. Such a design is what you will usually see at the international level. A full profile usually means one of two things. Either the bat is constructed from high quality lightweight willow or has an above average weight.

A happy medium that brings the benefits of both oval & round handles. This shape aids alignment, slightly weakens the bottom hand for more controlled stroke play and still allows for creative use of the bottom hand.

Like most cricket bats this stick needs the full preparation process before use. Take a look at the tab below for more information on this process.

The regular bow found in the majority of modern cricket bats which gets your hands slightly ahead of the ball for ease of stroke play. It also helps the cricket bat feel more aggressive.

A hybrid setup that allows some favourability to players who like to hit down the ground but still want the benefits of a mid sweet spot. Rarely find yourself on high bouncing wickets? A synthetic wicket specialist? Or thinking about a tour of the subcontinent? Well this sweet spot setup could really help some of your shots. Blast a drive through the covers and you'll know what we mean.

  • Additional charges may apply for cleaning /repairing bats that have been used, pressed, poorly knocked/oiled or damaged.
  • Please be aware, there are strictly no returns once the knocking in service is underway or completed.
  • You will still be required to "Play In" your new bat following these services, prior to Match Use. Throw downs & net sessions are required to assess YOUR bat. Some bats are made of softer willow than others & may require additional "Playing In".

Why Choose The GCCC In-Store Service?

Most cricket bat manufacturers will void a warranty if a bat breaks due to insufficient or poor preparation - so not preparing your new cricket bat will jeopardize your warranty.
Our GCCC In-Store service will help you get your bat well on the way to "Match Ready", so that you can get to the "playing-In" stage, faster!

No Commercial "Strapped-In" Machines: GCCC strictly advises against automated commercial machines that strap a bat down and smash it uniformly. These frequently cause deep bruising to the willow or immediate shoulder damage.

Hand-Guided Precision: Our specialised processes are carefully monitored by hand, allowing our crew to adjust the impact force and spend extra time on the specific areas your unique willow cleft needs most.

Add Crucial Extra Protection In-Store

While your bat is with us for its knocking-in service, we highly recommend adding these vital defensive features to protect the most vulnerable zones of the blade:

Toe Guard / Toe Goo Application: Protects the bottom of your bat from structural splits caused by damp pitches or digging out lethal yorkers. This is a requirement for warranties as toe damage from damp wickets, tapping, sliding etc is not a manufacturing fault.

Grip Modifications: Ask our team to fit an extra grip or anti-slip additions for ultimate feel at the crease.

GCCC WARRANTY CLAIM POLICY

The Greg Chappell Cricket Centre (GCCC) will always endeavour to process warranty claims within a reasonable timeframe and strictly in accordance with Australian Consumer Law (ACL) guarantees. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the ACL.

Every warranty claim is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Following a physical inspection, GCCC will evaluate the item to determine the nature of the fault and whether it constitutes a minor or major failure.
While we strive to process claims as quickly as possible, some claims may require further assessment or consultation internally or with the manufacturer to accurately determine the cause of the fault.

Minor Faults
If the problem is a minor fault, GCCC will repair the item within a reasonable timeframe, provided the repair resolves the issue with no foreseeable negative impact or recurrence.

Major Faults
If an item has a major fault, you are entitled to choose between a refund, exchange, or store credit. Under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), a major fault occurs when the item:
• Has a problem that would have stopped someone from buying the item if they had known about it.
• Is unsafe.
• Is significantly different from the sample or description.
• Doesn’t do what we said it would, or what you asked for, and can’t easily be fixed.

GCCC WARRANTY PERIODS - All warranty periods begin from the time of purchase.
CRICKET BATS - 12-month warranty period
Covers broken handles, split clefts, storm damage and large shoulder cracks in conjunction with our bat guidelines.

PROTECTIVE GEAR - 6-month warranty period
Covers large split seams or faulty stitching.

BAGS - 6-month warranty period
Covers split seams, faulty stitching, broken zippers or wheel faults.
FOOTWEAR - 6-month warranty period
Covers split seams, faulty stitching, spike blowouts, or sole separation.
Note: ASICS (only) has a 12-month warranty period.

HELMETS - 6-month warranty period
Covers broken micro-adjustment features.
Note: Helmet warranties do not cover damage caused by the impact of a cricket ball. Helmets are life-saving safety devices designed to absorb force, and for your protection, they should be replaced after any significant hit.

Health & Safety (Undergarments & Protectors)
If you are claiming a manufacturing fault on personal undergarments (briefs, trunks, jockstraps), protectors (boxes), or socks, the item must be thoroughly washed and clean before being presented to our staff for assessment.
Unwashed items will be immediately rejected for health and safety reasons.

EXAMPLES OF FAULTS IN CRICKET GEAR
Provided the warranty guidelines are adhered to, below are examples of minor vs. major faults across different product categories. Please note: These are illustrative examples only, and every claim remains subject to a physical assessment.
Cricket Bats
• Minor Fault: A broken handle or standard surface/edge cracking. These are easily repaired.
• Major Fault: The blade of a bat completely snaps in half, or the main cleft splits entirely down the middle
when striking a cricket ball.
Cricket Bags & Protective Gear
• Minor Fault: Torn stitching on a glove seam that can be easily re-stitched.
• Major Fault: The internal structural chassis of a wheelie bag snapping, or severe torn stitching down the
structural gusset of a batting glove that cannot be repaired.
Cricket Footwear
• Minor Fault: A replaceable metal spike coming loose or a minor cosmetic blemish.
• Major Fault: The entire sole completely separating and peeling away from the shoe's upper.

Please note: General wear and tear, product misuse and any of the bat-specific points listed below are not covered under warranty. This includes but is not limited to common playing damage such as toe-dragging (shoes), damage to bags from dragging, overfilling or misuses, diving abrasions or the natural degradation of gloves or pads from sweat,
helmet impact etc. We know cricket gear works hard out on the pitch, so if you have any questions about your equipment, simply chat with our GCCC staff and we’ll gladly take a look

GCCC PROOF OF PURCHASE REQUIREMENTS
Please note that all warranty periods commence from the original date of purchase. To process any warranty claim, GCCC requires valid proof of purchase to confirm the item was purchased from our stores, or online and to establish the product details and commencement date of the warranty period.

We accept the following forms of proof:
• Original physical register receipt or tax invoice.
• A clear photograph or photocopy of the original receipt that can be linked to a GCCC transaction
• GCCC online order confirmation email or order number.
• A valid bank or credit card statement clearly showing the specific transaction amount and date that can be linked to a GCCC transaction
• Purchase history recorded under your GCCC customer account.

Note: If you are unable to provide acceptable proof of purchase, GCCC reserves the right to decline the warranty claim. We highly recommend registering your purchases under a GCCC customer profile in-store or online so we can
easily retrieve your receipt history should you ever need it.

GCCC CRICKET BAT WARRANTY OVERVIEW
Because cricket bats are crafted from natural English willow, standard wear and tear—including surface cracks and
edge marks—are completely normal and part of the bat's natural lifespan. This can even occur in the early stages of
the knocking-in process and is rarely a cause for concern.
However, if you experience a genuine manufacturing issue, our warranty process falls into two categories:
1. Minor Faults A minor fault involves superficial damage or issues that can be easily and effectively
fixed. For these issues, GCCC will arrange a professional repair to get your bat back into match-ready
condition.
2. Major Faults A major fault occurs when there is a severe structural failure that makes the bat
completely unusable (for example, the blade of a bat splitting entirely in two pieces during general
play, provided there is no evidence of misuse). If a bat is assessed as having a major fault in adherence
to our warranty guidelines, GCCC will offer your choice of a refund, replacement, or store credit.
The Assessment Process
Whenever a bat is returned, our team will physically inspect the damage to determine whether the issue is a minor
fault, a major fault, or standard wear and tear. While we strive to process claims as quickly as possible, please note
that most cricket bat claims cannot be remedied on the spot. They typically require further assessment and
consultation with the manufacturer to accurately determine the cause of the fault and the appropriate solution.

GCCC CRICKET BAT WARRANTY: SPECIFIC GUIDELINES
Things to Remember (The Nature of Willow)
• Cracking is Natural: A cricket bat will not look new forever. Surface cracks can appear even during the initial knocking-in process and rarely do these indicate a manufacturing fault or defect. A small amount of superficial cracking is completely normal, has no impact on performance, and is a natural characteristic of English willow.
• Preparation Variances: Knocking-in times are a general guide. Some bats require more preparation than initially advised. Completing a set number of hours does not automatically mean the bat is match-ready; the quality and technique of the knocking-in are what truly matter.
• Lifespan & Care: The lifespan of a bat is directly determined by; how well it is initially prepared, how often it is used, the conditions on which it is used in and how well it is stored/maintained. Premature or excessive cracking can often indicate insufficient knocking-in, improper use, or simply the natural reaction of softer
willow.
• Price vs. Durability: The price of a bat reflects the grade of willow as determined by the manufacturer, not its potential longevity. Premium, higher-priced bats are often made from softer, lower-density willow - while they typically offer superior performance, they may not last as long as cheaper, denser bats.
• Required Protection: Added protection such as Extratec (facing) and toe guards are highly recommended to enhance longevity. Please note that if a bat sustains damage directly resulting from a lack of standard care - such as playing without a correctly fitted toe guard, exposing the toe to moisture, or insufficient oiling—this is considered neglect and will not be covered under warranty.

THE CRICKET BAT WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER
A warranty claim may be declined if the bat has been subject to misuse, neglect, or general wear and tear. Specifically, warranties strictly do not cover:
• Improper Preparation: Damage resulting from a lack of proper knocking-in or playing-in. Please note: GCCC strongly advises against generic machine preparation or preparation outside of GCCC. Machines often fail to complete the process correctly and can place excessive pressure on a bat, causing structural damage.
• Poor Maintenance: Issues arising from inadequate care, such as over-oiling, under-oiling, or the absence/poor maintenance of a toe guard or Extratec facing.
• Improper Use: Damage caused by hitting objects other than a cricket ball (e.g., striking the stumps, tapping the crease, sliding the bat or hitting the ground).
• Incompatible Balls: Damage sustained from using poor-quality balls, non-leather composite balls, or heavy bowling machine balls.
• Inaccurate Play (Yorker & Shoulder Damage): Impact damage outside of the intended hitting zone (the sweet spot/middle), including yorker damage to the toe or cracking on the edges and shoulders caused by inaccurate play.
• Environmental Damage & Poor Storage: Damage caused by moisture (e.g., playing in wet weather or batting on a damp wicket) or excessive heat (e.g., leaving the bat in a hot car boot or in direct sunlight).
• Excessive Use: General wear and tear that occurs over time from heavy or prolonged usage.
• Surface Cracking: Superficial cracks on the face, toe, or edges of the bat. This is inevitable for English Willow, does not resemble a manufacturing fault and does not impact the bat's performance.
• Consumables & Cosmetics: Peeling, bubbling, or scratched stickers, as well as standard wear and tear on the rubber grip, Extratec facing, or toe guard.
• Removal or Alteration: The removal or alteration of original manufacturer stickers and decals (which may prevent accurate identification of the bat).

GCCC CRICKET BAT WARRANTY PROCESS
To determine the appropriate course of action for a warranty claim, GCCC must physically assess your bat. Because every bat and playing situation is unique, there is no standard remedy; each claim is evaluated strictly on a case-by-case basis.
• Assessment: Depending on the nature of the fault, the remedy may include a repair, replacement, store credit, or refund. GCCC processes warranty returns for goods purchased both in-store and online, and all claims are assessed strictly in adherence to the Australian Consumer Law.
• Warranty Period: Please refer to our Warranty Periods for the listings on each specific product. All cricket bats sold by GCCC carry a 12-month warranty against manufacturing faults, provided the damage is not the result of consumer misuse, neglect, or standard wear and tear. See terms above.
• Timeframes: Please note that most claims cannot be remedied instantly in-store. Bats with broken handles, repairable cracks, and other minor faults that fall within the warranty guidelines are typically sent to the manufacturer for professional repair. Please allow an average of 10–14 working days for the assessment and repair process to be completed in conjunction with the manufacturer.
• Proof of Purchase: A valid proof of purchase (as listed above) must be supplied by the customer to initiate any warranty claim.
