Cricket Bats

At the Greg Chappell Cricket Centre, we know purchasing a new cricket bat can be an exciting, but sometimes daunting task. That's why we're happy to assist you in any way we can to select and prepare your new cricket bat!

Arguably the most exciting piece of cricket equipment you can buy yourself; here's your guide to selecting that perfect piece of willow.

1. Bat Size - Get It Right From the Start

This is fundamental. Junior bat sizes range from 00 (smallest) to SA (Small Adults)
Size 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Youth/Harrow, Small Adults

For juniors who might be just about to start their cricketing journey, the bat should reach your hip bone comfortably when standing upright with the bat resting on the ground.

Senior size bats are usual:
Short Blade (SB), Short Handle (SH) , Long Blade (LB)

The most common adults size bat is the Short Handle, which suits the vast majority of players. Long Blade bats are available for taller players (typically over 193cm) who prefer a longer hitting area. Short Blades can be perfect for those with a slighter build, this could be an adolescent moving into their first senior bat, or a female cricketer

Always check the manufacturer's size chart and where possible, get a fitting from one of our GCCC Kit Crew – a bat that's too long or too short will throw off your balance and timing.

2. Bat Weight
This is highly personal.
For Junior bats, the manufacturing will always try to make these as lightweight as they can for the kids.
For Senior cricket bats, they typically range from 2lb 7oz to 3lb+.

Too Heavy: A bat that's too heavy will slow your bat speed, make it difficult to adjust to quick deliveries, and lead to fatigue.

Too Light: A bat that's too light might feel whippy, but it can lack power and sometimes lead to a loss of control if you over-swing.

The "Pick-Up" Test: This is more important than the actual static weight on a scale. Hold the bat by the handle and extend it in front of you. Does it feel balanced? Does it feel lighter than its actual weight? This "pick-up" is critical for comfortable manoeuvring and quick hand-eye coordination. A well-balanced heavier bat can often feel lighter on the pick-up than a poorly balanced lighter bat.

3. Sweet Spot Position
Tailor your sweet spot to your style of play - usually cricket bats will be marked as having a low, mid, or high sweet spot.
Here's a breakdown below:

Low Sweet Spot: Favoured by front-foot players, typically those playing on flatter, slower pitches (less common here, but good for driving).

Mid Sweet Spot: The most common and versatile profile, suitable for all-round players and a good choice for the variety of pitches we encounter.

High Sweet Spot: Preferred by back-foot players, or those playing on bouncier pitches (like some fast wickets). Good for cutting and pulling.

4. English vs Kashmir Willow
This is a BIG one!
So what's the difference?

English Willow: This is the gold standard for cricket bats due to its superior performance, lightness, and responsiveness. It's renowned for its fantastic "ping" (the sound and feel of the ball coming off the bat).

English Willow is typcially graded (Grade 1 being the highest, then 2, 3, etc.). Higher grades typically have more unblemished grains, better performance, and a higher price tag. But Don't be afraid of a few blemishes or a slightly lower grade if the bat feels good – sometimes a Grade 3 bat can outperform a Grade 1!

Kashmir Willow: This is a more affordable and durable alternative. However, it's typically heavier and doesn't offer the same "ping" or feel as English willow.
Kashmir willow is ideal for casual play, beginners, or those on a tighter budget. For serious match play, especially at higher levels, English willow is highly recommended.

Warranty & Returns Information
Warranty Information
GCCC will deal with any return of a bat purchased either from our Stores or Online. We will always assess your claim in adherence of the Australian Consumer Law. All cricket bats sold by GCCC have a 12-month warranty against damage deemed to be manufacturing fault & no fault of the consumer. Most claims cannot be remedied instantly.

Bat Preparation Requirement: You must properly prepare your custom bat before use. This includes Knocking-In and applying Extratec facing & Toe protection. Warranties are unable to be applied if proper preparation of the bat is not undertaken.

All warranty claims require the bat to be examined by the manufacturer to verify a fault is present. Claims are assessed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with consumer law.

The Warranty Does Not Cover
Yorker damage to the toe of the bat.

Damage that occurs due to lack of Knocking/Playing In, machine Knocking-In or inaccurate play.

GCCC doesn’t recommend that bats be Knocked/Played In by machine. Machines often fail to complete the process correctly or damage the bats and put pressure on the shoulders causing damage.

Damage resulting by bats being machine prepared (not naturally Played In)

Damage that occurs due to poor preparation/maintenance (e.g. lack of toe guard, over/under oiling etc)

Damage due to moisture (wet weather) or heat (do not leave in car boot/direct sunlight etc)

Damage from non-leather or composite balls (including bowling machine balls)

Improper use (including hitting things others than cricket balls – eg stumps)

WARRANTY INFORMATION

CRICKET BAT WARRANTY & THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • A cricket bat is not going to look new forever & cracks will appear.
  • Bats are made of a natural material & have an incredibly hard task of hitting a solid Cricket Ball repeatedly.
  • Cracks can occur during the Knocking-In process & do not necessarily resemble a fault/defect
  • Cracking may be an indication of insufficient Knocking-In, improper preparation/use, soft willow etc
  • A small amount of cracking is normal & has no impact on the performance of the bat. These can usually be sanded down & have been appearing on bats for centuries
  • The lifespan of a bat depends on the amount of use & care taken.
  • Added protection such as Extratec & Toe Protection is highly recommended for enhanced longevity
  • Some bats may require more/less preparation than initially advised. Knocking-In time is a general guide & does not mean that once you have completed the hours that your bat is ready. Eg if your Knocking-In has not been performed up to standards you could spend 30+ hours on your bat & it may still not be ready.
  • The price of a bat does not reflect the potential longevity of the willow. In fact, the more expensive bats are made of softer willow & though they will outperform cheaper bats, they may not last as long.

BAT WARRANTY PROCESS:

GCCC needs to see your bat to arrange the correct course of action following a warranty claim. Currently, there is no standard remedy for a claim. Each claim will depend on the circumstances & is taken on a case-to-case basis. A course of action may include a repair, replacement, refund or having the service performed again.

THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER:

  • Yorker damage to the toe of the bat
  • Damage that occurs due to lack of Knocking/Playing In, machine Knocking-In or inaccurate play.
  • GCCC doesn’t recommend that bats be Knocked/Played In by machine. Machines often fail to complete the process correctly or damage the bats and put pressure on the shoulders causing damage.
  • Damage resulting by bats being machine prepared (not naturally Played In)
  • Damage that occurs due to poor preparation/maintenance (e.g. lack of toe guard, over/under oiling etc)
  • Damage due to moisture (wet weather) or heat (do not leave in car boot/direct sunlight etc)
  • Damage from non-leather or composite balls (including bowling machine balls)
  • Improper use (including hitting things others than cricket balls – eg stumps)

Cricket Bat Warranty may be voided if the above guidelines are not adhered to. Bats with broken handles, cracks & other minor occurrences within the warranty guidelines will be sent back to the manufacturer for repair. It takes an average of 10-14 working days to assess/repair the occurrence in conjunction with the manufacturer. When making a warranty claim, proof of purchase needs to be supplied to GCCC by the customer (receipt/bank statement).

Please remember that Cricket Bats are made from a natural material that has the incredibly hard task of hitting a solid object repeatedly. A small amount of cracking is normal & has no impact on the performance of the bat. Small cracks can usually be sanded out and have been appearing on cricket bats for centuries! Cracking is not a sign of a faulty bat, but an indication your bat requires further knocking in.
