KITTING OUT YOUR JUNIOR PLAYER
Your child has announced they're playing cricket and somebody has sent you a website full of words like "short handle" and "abdo guard". Here's the short version: you need less than you think, and the most expensive mistake is buying gear that's too big.
Work down the page one category at a time. Tell us your child's height, and it will be on record for you to refer to at all times.

WHAT IS YOUR CHILD PLAYING?
A six-year-old in Cricket Blast needs about $60 of gear. A twelve-year-old facing a hard ball needs closer to $500.
Ring your club before you spend anything. Ask what ball they use, whether helmets are compulsory, and whether they have loan gear for first-year players. Most do.

Shoes off, heels against the wall. Write these down to be used at all times when getting kitted out.

HOW TO SIZE IT
- Stand the bat beside them — the handle top should reach between thigh and hip.
- Hold it straight out in the top hand alone for five seconds. If the end dips, go lighter.
- Kashmir willow for a first hard-ball season. Fine at this level, a third of the price of English willow.
