GCCC English Willow Grading Guidelines

Whether you're just starting out in your cricketing journey, or you're a seasoned pro, purchasing a new cricket bat is an investment, and at the Greg Chappell Cricket Centre, we want to make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your hard-earned money.

Every piece of English Willow is a natural product. When a master bat-maker looks at a raw wooden block (a "cleft"), they grade it based on visual purity, grain straightness, and the absence of blemishes.

Here is our GCCC guide to the primary grades of English Willow to help you choose the right stick for your game.

The GCCC English Willow Grading Breakdown

English Willow Grading - 1

This is the absolute pinnacle of visual quality—the top 1% to 5% of the harvest. If you look at a Test player's bat on TV, this is what they are swinging.

Grains - Evenly spaced grains on the face.

Appearance - May have zero or very minor blemishes in the playing area. The face will look clean, pristine, and unbleached.

Performance - Because the wood is older and denser in grain count, Grade 1 bats generally offer incredible "ping" straight off the shelf.

English Willow Grading - 2

Excellent quality timber, widely preferred by competitive grade and club cricketers who want top-tier performance without the premier price tag.

Grains - May have slightly less uniform spacing than a Grade 1.

Appearance - You may see some minor cosmetic blemishes, pin knots, or a small amount of dark "heartwood" (redwood) tracking along the edges.

Performance - Exceptionally high. Side-by-side in a blind test, most players cannot tell the performance difference between a Grade 2 and a Grade 1.

English Willow Grading - 3

This is the workhorse of the cricket industry and represents the highest volume of bats produced. It offers the best value-for-money balance.

Grains - May not always run perfectly parallel or straight.

Appearance - Visual marks, small knots, specks, or "butterfly stains" are common in the playing area. It may feature a bit of amount of two-tone colouring (a mix of white sapwood and dark redwood).

Performance - Fantastic. While they may take a little longer to reach their peak performance during the knocking-in phase, they are incredibly durable.

English Willow Grading - 4 & Below

Ideal for beginners, casual players, or club cricketers on a strict budget who still want the authentic feel of English Willow over Kashmir alternatives.

Grains - May be wavy or curved.

Appearance - Marked with natural imperfections, knots, and bleaching stains. Manufacturers may apply a clean protective anti-scuff sheet or a printed grain face over these bats to clean up their appearance.

Performance - Reliable and rugged. Because the wood is often from younger trees with wider grains, it is highly resilient to damage, though the sweet spot may feel slightly smaller initially.

GCCC Kit Crew Secret
Don't sleep on a butterfly willow bat! The wood in a butterfly stain is naturally compressed and incredibly hard. While it looks unusual, butterfly bats are notoriously durable and frequently possess a phenomenal ping.
