Neck protectors—securely fixed or fitted to the rear of batting helmets—are mandatory for all batters facing fast or medium pace bowling in CA-sanctioned competitions - including state and pathway programs — players must wear helmets that meet the BS7928:2013 British Standard.
Currently it is strongly recommended by Cricket Australia for the use of BS7928:2013 helmets in community cricket for batting, wicket-keeping up to the stumps, and close-in fielding. Cricket Australia also strongly recommend that all community cricket participants wear a neck protector in addition to their British Standard helmet to help safeguard both head and neck.
Please check the relevant governing sporting body for their guidelines on Helmets and Neck protection as they may vary.
Things to check when buying a neck guard or a helmet with a pre-fitted or permanent neck guard.
- Check the compatibility of the helmet brand - Not all guards fit all lids
- Choose the smallest size that still shields the C‑spine - Over‑sized guards can catch on your shoulder. This will allow you to turn your head freely
- Ensure the guard is fitted properly before each use, ensuring it hasn’t come loose
- Ensure it is comfortable when you are standing in a batting stance, as well as moving around
